Real or artificial tree
The question is not which tree is “better”, but what you are prepared to repeat every year.
One-off cost versus yearly
A real tree is bought anew every season. A cast-needle tree is bought once, packed into its box after the holidays and waits for next December looking just the same.
Needles
A real tree starts dropping needles in the first week in a warm room — that is what drying needles do. A cast branch cannot shed by definition: there is nothing to drop.
If you choose a real tree: care
A real tree will last longer indoors if you follow a few simple rules.
- Recut the trunk before setting it up so the tree takes up water better
- Stand it in a water-holding base and top up the water daily
- Keep it away from radiators, fireplaces and heaters
- Check the needles: if a twig snaps instead of bending, the tree has dried out
Even with good care a real tree lasts one season: after the holidays it has to be taken out and disposed of.
Fire risk
Dry needles on a real tree are a typical cause of holiday fires: they catch quickly and burn with a tall flame, so a real tree must not be left to dry out near a heat source. Cast polyethylene does not dry out, but it is still plastic: keep an artificial tree away from candles, fireplaces and heaters too, and only use lights that are in good working order.
Setting up an artificial tree
A cast-needle tree unfolds in about a minute, and fluffing the branches takes 30–60 minutes. It is a once-a-season job: after that the tree stays exactly as it is until the end of the holidays — no watering and no sweeping up needles.
Storage is the honest downside of an artificial tree
An artificial tree needs space between seasons: a box on a top shelf, in a storeroom or a wardrobe. Keep it dry, boxed, with nothing heavy on top. If there is truly nowhere at home to keep the box, that is a real argument for a live tree.
Weight and delivery
A 2.1 m tree — the most popular height — weighs 18–21 kg depending on the model, so carrying it yourself is not always convenient. Cast-needle trees ship with Nova Poshta free of charge within 1–3 business days; pay by card or cash on delivery. A real tree is usually bought at a tree market and taken home by hand.
Scent and atmosphere
Here the real tree wins: a cast tree cannot reproduce genuine pine scent. If the scent is the main reason you put up a tree, an artificial one will not replace it.
A common compromise: an artificial tree in the room and a few real branches in a vase — you get the scent, and the needles stay in one place.
When a real tree is the better choice
A real tree is a strong choice if the scent and the ritual matter to you: going to a tree market, picking one out and bringing it home. It takes up no space between seasons and makes sense if you spend only a few days of the holidays at home.
When an artificial tree is the better choice
An artificial tree is more practical if it needs to stand for a long time, if your home is warm and dry, or if you would rather not hunt for a tree of the right height and shape every year and haul it home. Another argument is predictability: the tree you chose once will look the same next December.
If artificial, which kind
Artificial trees differ above all in their needles. Cast needles are three-dimensional and follow the shape of a real sprig, while PVC is flat cut film. Many models combine both: cast needles on the outside, PVC inside the crown for fullness. Foresterra cast-needle trees are made in Uman, Ukraine, from 100% virgin SABIC polyethylene (the Netherlands).
Does a cast-needle tree shed over time?
No. Cast needles do not shed: each sprig is cast in one piece, so there is nothing to fall off. How it looks from season to season depends on other things — whether the branches were fluffed after unboxing and whether the tree was stored dry, with nothing pressing on it.
How long will an artificial tree last?
That depends on care and storage, so you will not find an exact figure here. Cast-needle trees come with a 5-year warranty, and careful folding and dry storage help the tree keep its look from one season to the next.
Will an artificial tree arrive in time for the holidays?
A cast-needle tree can be set up in one evening: a minute to unfold and 30–60 minutes for the branches. For delivery, allow 1–3 business days for dispatch plus Nova Poshta transit time, and up to 2 weeks for pre-order models. So it is best to order a tree for the holidays in advance rather than in the final week.
What height should you choose?
Subtract 20 cm from your ceiling height — that is the tallest tree that will fit without bending the top. Cast-needle trees range from 0.6 to 4 m.
