Hanging or wall-mounted tree
It is not a miniature of a traditional tree but a format of its own — half a crown set against the wall or suspended, instead of a full cone on a stand.
Who it suits
- A compact flat where a floor-standing tree would block the way
- A rental where a stand on the floor is awkward or not allowed
- A home with a cat or dog that knocks over trees on stands
- A studio flat with no spare corner for festive decor
Wall-mounted versus hanging
A wall-mounted tree is fixed to the wall and stays flat, with branches on one side. A hanging tree is suspended from the ceiling and is full on all sides, so it can be seen from every angle.
The same material
Hanging and wall-mounted models use the same cast needles as the floor-standing trees: they do not shed and hold their shape.
Four tree formats compared
| Format | Where it goes | Floor space | Seen from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor-standing | on a stand on the floor | needed | every side except the wall |
| Wall-mounted | on a wall or door | not needed | the front |
| Hanging | under the ceiling | not needed | every side |
| Potted | on a table, windowsill or shelf | not needed | every side |
How to choose the spot
- Wall-mounted — a pier wall, an entrance or interior door, the wall above a chest of drawers or console
- Hanging — the space above a dining table, a bay window, a stairwell, a shop window
- Keep it away from open flames, heaters and hot lamps
- If the crown will carry lights, plan how the wire will reach the socket without crossing a walkway
Fixing: what to check in advance
A wall-mounted tree hangs on the wall and a hanging tree on the ceiling, so choose fixings to suit the surface. Concrete, brick and plasterboard carry weight differently: plasterboard needs special anchors, and nothing should be fixed to a stretch ceiling without a mounting insert.
If you cannot drill — in a rented flat, for example — a wall-mounted model can go on an existing hook, curtain rail or door. Count the weight together with the decorations: the fixing should hold it with a margin.
How to decorate
A wall-mounted tree has only a front, so all the decorations gather there: fewer pieces, but each one is on show. Light baubles, ribbons and a small string of lights along the outline work well.
A hanging tree is visible from every side — spread the decorations evenly around it so the crown looks finished from anywhere in the room. Light ornaments are better than heavy ones here: they do not make the tree sway or strain the fixing.
What you get
- A clear floor — walkways, cleaning and furniture stay as they were
- A tree whose lower branches pets cannot reach
- An unusual accent that catches the eye from the doorway
What to keep in mind
- A hanging tree needs a secure fixing point in the ceiling
- A wall-mounted tree is seen only from the front, and presents cannot be arranged around it
- Lights need a socket nearby or battery power
- Heavy glass ornaments are best swapped for lighter ones
- Measure the height and width of the spot: the tree should not touch the ceiling, furniture or open cabinet doors
How to fluff the branches
The branches of hanging and wall-mounted models are fluffed the same way as on floor-standing trees: from the base of each branch to the tip, easing every sprig slightly out and up. A wall-mounted tree is easiest to fluff on a table before hanging; a hanging one is best done in place, so you can see the crown from every side.
When a floor-standing tree is still the better choice
If the tree is to be the main event of the holiday, with presents underneath, and the room has a free corner, a floor-standing model gives more volume. For very small spaces there is a middle option — a potted tree for a table or windowsill.
Do hanging trees shed?
No. Cast needles do not shed, so no needles collect under a hanging tree — neither on the dining table nor on the floor.
Can a wall-mounted tree go on the front door?
Yes, as long as the door closes properly and the tree does not get in the way of the handle and lock. Fix it so it does not knock against the door when it opens, and check that the branches do not catch on the frame.
How to store it after the holidays?
Like any cast-needle tree: in its box, in a dry room, with nothing heavy on top. Store a wall-mounted model flat so the branches on one side do not bend under their own weight. Remove all decorations and hooks before packing.
Does a hanging tree work for an office or shop window?
Yes. Where the floor is taken up by desks or foot traffic, a hanging tree adds a festive accent overhead without getting in anyone’s way. In a shop window it can be seen from the street from any angle, and there is still room for goods beneath it.
