Small trees: where they go
A small tree is bought not instead of a large one, but for places a large one won’t fit — or where you want the festive feeling in one more room.
The ceiling rule does not apply to these heights at all. A 0.6–1.2 m tree is chosen by the surface it will stand on and how much free space that surface has.
Typical spots
- Table — 0.6–0.9 m, so you can still see the person opposite
- Chest of drawers or sideboard — up to 1.2 m; with the height of the furniture it reads as a full-size tree
- Windowsill — short and narrower, so it clears the window reveal
- Child’s room — a small tree of their own that the child decorates
- Office, study, reception desk — wherever a floor-standing tree would block the way
- Hallway — a console or shelf by the door, the first thing guests see
Which height to choose: a table
| Location | Tree height | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Dining table or desk | 0.6–0.9 m | don’t block the people opposite; leave room for plates or a laptop |
| Chest of drawers, cabinet, console | 0.9–1.2 m | the top, furniture included, at roughly eye level |
| Windowsill | 0.6–0.9 m | sill depth, the window reveal and curtains |
| Floor in a child’s room | 1.2 m | a stable base and a clear path |
| Reception, office counter | 0.6–1.2 m | don’t get in the way of passage or view |
Measure more than the height
Before ordering, measure the width and depth of the surface. The bottom tier of a small tree is wider than it looks in photos, and on a narrow sill or console the crown can hang over the edge.
Leave a little space from the edge on every side so the tree isn’t caught by a hand, a bag or a curtain. On a windowsill, check that the window still opens and the top doesn’t hit the reveal.
Potted and gift trees
For tables and chests of drawers there is a separate catalogue page — potted and gift trees. The pot replaces the stand, so the tree looks finished without a skirt or a separate base. For a wall or door with no surface at all, there are hanging and wall-mounted models.
How to decorate a small tree
- Small ornaments: big baubles look heavy on a small crown
- Two or three colours rather than a mix of everything — on a small tree clutter shows more
- A short battery-powered light string if there is no socket nearby
- A branch holds about 1 kg of decorations, but on a small tree spread the weight evenly so the crown doesn’t lean to one side
- A light topper in proportion to the crown
Common mistakes when choosing a small tree
- Taking the tallest small tree “just in case”: on a dining table a 1.2 m tree hides the people opposite
- Forgetting the furniture height: a 1.2 m tree on a tall chest of drawers can end up taller than an adult
- Placing it right at the edge of a shelf or sill, where it is easy to knock
- Setting it right against a radiator or heater: hot air does neither the branches nor the ornaments any good
A small tree in a child’s room
Children enjoy decorating their own tree. For that, choose shatterproof ornaments, put the tree on a stable surface or on the floor, and fix the lights so the wire doesn’t hang down.
A small tree in the office
For a reception or meeting room a small tree marks the season without rearranging the space. It needs no fixing, and after the holidays it folds into its box and waits in a cupboard for next December.
A second tree at home
A small model works well as a second tree alongside a large one: in the bedroom, the kitchen, a child’s room. The needles and branches are the same as on floor-standing trees, so two trees in one home look like a pair, not a random set.
It packs the same way, into its own box, and takes little storage space.
A small tree as a gift
A tabletop tree is an easy gift for parents, colleagues or the office: there is no ceiling to measure, it takes little space and lasts more than one season. The warranty is 5 years, as for the large models.
Are small models different in quality from large ones?
No: the same 100% virgin SABIC polyethylene (the Netherlands) and cast needles that don’t shed. What differs is the size and number of branches, not the material.
Which small tree goes with a large one?
The same colour: green with green, snow-tipped with snow-tipped. Choose the height by where the second tree will stand, not by the large one — a bedroom and a kitchen call for quite different sizes.
Is a stand needed?
Not for a potted tree. If the model has a metal stand, put a napkin or mat under it so it doesn’t scratch a polished table or lacquered chest.
How long does setting up take?
Less than a floor tree: a small tree has fewer branches, so fluffing the crown is quicker than the 30–60 minutes a large tree usually needs.
How is a small tree delivered?
By Nova Poshta free of charge; dispatch in 1–3 working days, pre-orders within 2 weeks. Pay by card or cash on delivery. At the branch you can inspect the box from the outside before paying; open and check the tree after paying, right there, and any damage is recorded in a report.
